Another Historic First

Blog 146 – Tuesday, May 26, 2009 Sunny and breezy, temperatures in the 80’s.
Another historic first has taken place today as President Obama nominated Puerto Rican Blog descendant, Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the pending vacancy of the United States Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor brings a wealth of experience as a longtime lawyer, private litigator, public prosecutor, and judge. Rising from humble roots, she has a profound understanding of how the law affects real families in real situations. Ms. Sotomayor comes from an immigrant family living in a housing project in the Bronx and refers to herself as "an ordinary woman who has been blessed with extraordinary opportunities and experiences." In her acceptance speech, she graciously gave all credit to her mother who in her words was responsible for her station in life today. Judge Sotomayor and her brother, now a physician, were raised largely by their widowed mother, who worked two jobs during their childhood. Reading like an "American Dream" come true, Sotomayor will be among those on my prayer list – a woman who has risen above her circumstances and who has the possibility of strengthening our judicial system and furthering "liberty and justice for all".
